International Red Cross and Red Crescent Day

8th of May 2009 which is International Red Cross and Red Crescent Day - the Malaysian Red Crescent, ICRC, and the International Federation are pleased to launch the "Our World. Your Move" campaign to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the battle of Solferino and the founding ideal that the actions of one person can, indeed, make the world a better place. We also recognize the 90th anniversary of the founding of the International Federation and the 60th anniversary of the Geneva Conventions, which accord protection to the most vulnerable people in times of war.

This global campaign is a call to action, urging people everywhere to address local and global humanitarian challenges such as war and conflict, climate change, displacement, poverty, disease; to reach out, make a move and better their world. It highlights the power of individuals to make a difference, as Henry Dunant did 150 years ago.

In Malaysia, the "Our World. Your Move" campaign opens on 8th May with an exhibition of images hosted by the National Art Gallery and officially launched by Deputy National Chairman of the Malaysian Red Crescent Mr. Hisham Harun Hashim. These images, which will be on display until the end of May, depict the plight of persons affected by war, and the challenges they face in rebuilding their lives.

This theme is also evident in a joint online portal (www.ourworld-yourmove.org) launched by the ICRC and the Federation, putting the spotlight on the human cost of disasters, health emergencies, and wars. In addition to the images of war, the portal contains personal accounts from conflict and disaster survivors, and suggestions for anyone looking for ways to make a difference in their world. It’s time to make a move.
